How to Grocery Shop for a Healthier Diet

If you are trying to eat healthier, you know what a challenge it can be at the grocery store. It seems like everywhere you look, there’s more and more processed, sugar-laden, artificial foods. How can you maintain a healthy lifestyle and still shop conveniently at your local store?

~Location. As a general rule, it’s best to shop the perimeter of the store. This is where you will find the produce and refrigerated foods, i.e. –  healthier. Now, this is not a hard and fast rule, since there can still be artificial ingredients in certain foods like meat and dairy products. But overall, you will find healthier foods around the outside rather than down the aisles.

~Read the label. Yes, it’s time-consuming, but it’s really the only way to make sure you’re not getting a whole lot of things you don’t want in your food. Some key items to avoid – aspartame, MSG, anything hydrogenated, basically anything you can’t pronounce and sounds like it was created in a lab. Look for items with the fewest, simplest ingredients.

~Research. If you’re still not sure about certain foods or ingredients, do your research. Look up recommended brands and ingredients. While you’re there, check out healthy recipes as well, to add some variety and excitement to your menus. Knowledge is power, and will save you time and frustration while you shop.

It can definitely be a challenge to shop healthy these days, but with a little preparation and strategy, you can be successful. Remember the bigger picture – the health of you and your family- to give you some motivation. Better health is more than worth the effort.
